D3 + K2: Absorbing Calcium Is Only Half the Story
737 WORDS • 5 MIN READShare
CALCIUM NEEDS TWO ALLIES.
Calcium gets most of the attention when we talk about bones.
But calcium sitting on your plate is not enough.
Your body still has to absorb it and use it.
That is where vitamins D3 and K2 connect.
D3 HELPS GET CALCIUM IN.
Vitamin D helps your intestines absorb calcium.
Without enough vitamin D, your body cannot make full use of the calcium available from food.
So the first part is straightforward:
Calcium provides the mineral.
D3 helps you absorb it.
Vitamin D also helps maintain the calcium and phosphorus levels needed for normal bone mineralization.
K2 HELPS WITH WHAT HAPPENS NEXT.
Vitamin K has a different job.
It is needed to activate certain proteins through a process called carboxylation.
Two important examples are osteocalcin, which is involved in bone mineralization, and matrix Gla protein, or MGP, which is involved in regulating calcium in tissues.
So saying K2 simply "pushes calcium into your bones" is too simplistic.
A clearer way to put it is:
K2 helps activate proteins your body uses to handle calcium.
THAT'S WHY D3 + K2 MAKE SENSE TOGETHER.
D3 and K2 are not doing the same job.
That is exactly why combining them makes sense.
D3 helps calcium get absorbed.
K2 helps activate proteins involved in what happens afterward.
Their roles meet in the same calcium and bone system.
This is a good example of our formulation rule:
Combine when it improves the formula. Separate when combining would dilute it.
SO WHY NOT ADD CALCIUM TOO?
Because calcium is much more dependent on what you already eat.
Dairy, fortified foods, calcium-set tofu, and fish with edible bones can provide meaningful amounts. Other diets may provide much less. Calcium absorption also varies by food source.
That makes calcium supplementation more individual.
If your diet already provides enough calcium, automatically adding another 500 or 600 mg may not be necessary.
If your diet falls short, supplementing the difference can make sense.
There is also a practical issue.
A meaningful calcium dose requires hundreds of milligrams, which means larger tablets or several capsules. Calcium supplements are also absorbed more efficiently when individual doses are around 500 mg or less.
Keeping calcium separate gives you more control.
Getting enough from food? You may not need to add it.
Not getting enough? Supplement the gap.
D3 + K2 DOESN'T REPLACE CALCIUM.
D3 and K2 help with calcium metabolism.
They do not provide the calcium itself.
Vitamin D cannot help you absorb calcium that is not available in the first place.
So think of the three this way:
Calcium supplies it.
D3 helps absorb it.
K2 helps activate proteins involved in handling it.
Three connected jobs.
But not necessarily three ingredients that need to be locked together in every capsule.
WHY 1,000 IU D3 + 100 MCG K2?
Each GENERIQ D3 + K2 capsule provides:
Vitamin D3: 1,000 IU / 25 mcg
Vitamin K2: 100 mcg as MK-7
For adults, recommended vitamin D intake is generally 600 to 800 IU per day depending on age, so 1,000 IU provides a meaningful daily supplemental amount without turning the formula into a megadose.
For K2, there is no separate official daily requirement specifically for MK-7. Vitamin K recommendations cover vitamin K as a whole.
So 100 mcg of MK-7 should not be treated as some universal magic number.
It is simply a practical daily amount paired with D3 in a formula built around calcium metabolism. GENERIQ provides these amounts in one capsule.
WHY MK-7?
K2 comes in several forms.
MK-7 is one of the better-studied menaquinones and is commonly used in daily K2 supplements.
But the important point is not that MK-7 somehow makes calcium obey instructions.
It supplies vitamin K for the enzymes that activate vitamin K-dependent proteins such as osteocalcin and MGP.
That is the actual biology.
THREE PARTS. THREE DIFFERENT JOBS.
Calcium, D3, and K2 belong in the same conversation.
But they do not always need to be in the same capsule.
Calcium intake depends heavily on your diet.
D3 helps you absorb it.
K2 helps activate proteins involved in using and regulating it.
That is why GENERIQ combines D3 + K2 while leaving calcium flexible.
Use what you need. Don't automatically add what you already have.
